Ltd has added to its $38 billion worth of work in hand with contract wins for the massive Gorgon LNG project in Western Australia and Mongolian mining operations.
In partnership with Italian oil and gas contractor Saipem, Leighton Contractors will develop a $900 million LNG jetty and marine structures project on Barrow Island, off the WA coast.
The consortium will design, supply material, fabricate, construct and commission the LNG jetty for Gorgon joint venture partners Chevron, Exxon-Mobil and Shell.
Construction is scheduled for completion in 2013.
"The LNG jetty and marine structures are integral to the Gorgon LNG project and the selection of the Saipem Leighton consortium as the preferred proponent clearly demonstrates our strong track record in delivering complex projects for our clients," Leighton Contractors managing director Peter McMorrow said.
An innovative, alternative structure has been proposed by the consortium to reduce the environmental impact on the Barrow Island nature reserve during construction, Leighton said.
Leighton chief executive Wal King said last week the company had about $1 billion worth of work relating to the Gorgon project already on it books.
Also announced on Thursday, Mongolia energy Corporation (MEC) has named Leighton Asia as its mining contractor for the Khushuut coal mine in western Mongolia.
Leighton has initially been contracted to provide mining operations to deliver three million tonnes of coal per annum, and in case of expansion eight million tonnes per annum.
Before that, Leighton will prepare the mine for production, including the mobilisation of equipment and personnel.
"The extensive potential for mine expansion along with the quality of the coking coal means the mine will become a significant exporter of coal from Mongolia," Leighton Asia managing director Hamish Tyrwhitt said.
Leighton Asia already holds a production contract for the Ukhaakhudag coal mine in the south Gobi region of Mongolia.
